The mindset shift that matters most: security is not a state you achieve at audit and maintain passively. It’s a continuous process. New vulnerability classes emerge. Dependencies update. Protocol economics shift under real user behavior. The threat model that was accurate at launch is incomplete six months later.
Teams that internalize this ship more carefully, monitor more actively, and respond more effectively when incidents occur — because they’ve planned for incidents occurring, rather than assuming they won’t.

Choosing the Right Partner: Why Domain Experience Beats General Web3 Skills
Building a dApp in 2026 is not a generic software development problem. The failure modes are specific, the security surface is unforgiving, and the decisions made in the first four weeks of discovery constrain every decision that follows.
General Web3 development skills — writing Solidity, deploying contracts, connecting a frontend — are table stakes. What separates protocols that scale from protocols that stall or get exploited is domain experience: teams that have shipped DEXs know where AMM math breaks under edge cases. Teams that have built NFT marketplaces know where royalty logic creates unexpected reentrancy surfaces. Teams that have launched on non-EVM chains know that standard EVM tooling assumptions don’t transfer.
Before engaging any development partner, ask these questions:
“Show me a protocol you’ve built in this category.” Not a token contract. Not a staking UI. A DEX, a marketplace, a bridge, a lending protocol — something with real TVL and real users, where the security and economic design decisions were consequential.
“What went wrong on your last mainnet launch, and how did you handle it?” The answer reveals more than a portfolio. Teams that have never encountered an incident either haven’t shipped enough or aren’t being honest. The response to adversity is what actually matters.
“What does your security process look like before you engage an external auditor?” The answer should include internal tooling, coverage targets, and a pre-audit checklist. If the answer is “we write tests and then get audited,” that’s insufficient for a production DeFi product.
